The history of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a blend of ancient heritage and modern development. The region has been inhabited for thousands of years, with archaeological evidence suggesting trade and cultural exchanges with ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. For centuries, the area was a collection of independent sheikhdoms and tribal societies, with the economy largely based on pearling and trade.

The British influence began in the 19th century, leading to the establishment of a series of treaties that provided protection and political stability. In 1971, the UAE was formed from the federation of seven emirates—Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.
